The USC Department is honored to announce the retirement of Professor Edward Blum after over 40 years of service to the department, the College and the University. Ed has had a long and distinguished career in the area of numerical analysis and held a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science in the Viterbi school of Engineering. Ed has been appointed as Professor of Mathematics Emeritus.

The USC Department of Mathematics is pleased and honored to announce that Professor Eric Friedlander formerly the Henry S. Noyes Professor of Mathematics at Northwestern University, has joined the department as the first holder of The Dean’s Chair in Mathematics. Professor Friedlander is one of the world’s leading experts in algebraic geometry, algebraic K-theory and motivic cohomology.

The USC Department of Mathematics is pleased and honored to announce that Professor Susan Friedlander formerly of the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago has joined the department. Professor Friedlander will serve as the Director of the department’s center for Applied Mathematical Sciences (CAMS). Professor Friedlander is a leading expert in the area of nonlinear partial differential equations and fluid dynamics.

The USC Department of Mathematics is pleased and honored to announce that Professor Jin Ma formerly of the Department of Mathematics at Purdue University has joined the department. Professor Ma will serve as the Director of the department’s program in Financial Mathematics. Professor Ma is a leading expert in the area of stochastic analysis and forward-backward stochastic differential equations.
